Fortunately, Hotel News Now’s infographics for the largest hotel company and hotel chain are much better than the info cards at the Oscars, so I didn’t mess up the announcement! Like in any other industry, being “the biggest” gives you some bragging rights, so Hotel News Now has compiled the data for the largest hotel chains and hotel brands for 2016: Marriott, after its acquisition of Starwood, is now the biggest hotel company measured by number of rooms and Holiday Inn Express the biggest single brand by the same measure. Find the top 5 in each category below!
Hotel News Now has compiled the rankings based on data from the parent company STR for the largest hotel companies and largest hotel brands:
The largest hotel company based on the number of rooms under management is Marriott International with 1,158,107 rooms, followed by Hilton Worldwide with 790,859 rooms and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) with 727,820 rooms. AccorHotels Group and Wyndham Worldwide round out the top 5.

While I understand that the industry uses room as the metric to measure “the largest”, as this drives revenue, for travelers, the number of properties is more interesting – having 5 hotels with 100 rooms each gives you a lot more choice than 1 hotel with 500 rooms. Wyndham Worldwide continues to be the largest hotel company by number of properties with 7,699 hotels.
The largest individual brand is Holiday Inn Express with 245,799 rooms in 2,487 properties, followed by Holiday Inn with 222,835 rooms at 1,207 properties and Hampton with 222,543 rooms at 2,217 hotels. Similar to the company ranking, I find the number of hotels more important for travelers than the number of rooms – I can only stay in one room at a time after all. And some of the largest brands by number of properties, like BestWestern, Super8, Quality Inn or ibis are missing from the list!
