The Wyndham Garden Inn Wismar on the coast of Mecklenburg Vorpommern in Eastern Germany offers a clean room, access to a gym and pool, a good breakfast and friendly service in an out-of-town location that’s feasible for road trips. While the value is just average for the location, it was excellent value for me due to the Wyndham Rewards promotion. Check out my review and photos to see if it can work for you!
Location: The Wyndham Garden Wismar is located in an industrial suburb of Wismar on the Eastern seaboard of Germany. Wismars beautiful old town is a 15 minute drive away and the state capital Schwerin is about 45 minutes drive. There are no restaurants in walking distance. This location makes a (rental) car mandatory and it’s an ok location for a road-trip along the coast (like I did), but not ideal if your main destinations are Wismar or Schwerin, there are more convenient hotels for that!
Service: Staff at the Wyndham Garden Wismar was friendly and had me checked in quickly, During booking, only a Twin Room showed available, but the front desk was able to assign me a room with a double bed, which I prefer. They provided all the necessary information about the hotel and town. They seemed to be unfamiliar with the Wyndham Rewards program benefits.
Housekeeping had done a good job preparing my room and everything was clean and in good working order.
Staff at the restaurant was professional and on top of their task, keeping the breakfast buffet stocked and tables cleared.
Overall, I’d consider the service above average for the category in Germany, with staff being a little more friendly than you’ll typically find.
Room: I had booked a Standard room and that’s what I got. The double bed takes up most of the room and is a standard, Northern European bed with two mattresses in one frame, with two comforters. Sheets and pillows are of good quality and it was comfortable, despite the “gap” between the mattresses.
In the corner by the window are a small table and chair, as well as a cabinet with the TV.
Against the wall, you’ll find a desk with chair, so you can get some work done, as well as a pod-coffee maker (yes!). You are losing a bit of space due to the connecting door to the next room and the door to the bathroom.
The whole room is furnished in light-colored wood with aquamarine accents and blue carpets, giving it an 80s feel. Everything is very clean and in good condition though.
The bathroom has a similar color scheme, with white tiles and yellow and blue accents, a common “maritime” scheme in Germany. You’ll have a sink in a brown’ish granite countertop and the toilet on one side and a shower-over-deep-tub with a partial glass wall on the other. This is pretty standard for German mid-scale hotels and everything was clean and in good working order. Soap and shampoo are provided in dispensers and towels are of good quality.
The free WiFi internet was reasonably reliable, but slow at an average speed of only 1.5Mbps, barely acceptable in 2018!
Restaurant & Amenities: The Wyndham Garden Inn Wismar has a full set of amenities, which was a pleasant surprise for this select service brand. There is a small fitness area, open to the hallway, with some basic cardio equipment to workout – not great, but better than what most European hotels offer.
You’ll also get an indoor pool that is large enough for a swim and there are also two single jacuzzi bathtubs to relax.
The breakfast was included in my rate and is served buffet-style in the hotel restaurant. The restaurant has plenty of seating and is in a brightly lit room, making it pleasant to start the day.
The buffet offered a good selection of bread rolls, pastries and lot of cold cuts and chees. You’ll also get cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, coffee & juice, as well as some eggs. Quality and taste were good, all pretty standard for Germany.
Value & Rewards: I had booked the room for $78/night including breakfast. That’s an ok rate for the location during summer high season, considering the remote location. You can find current rates for your dates here!
I booked during a Wyndham Rewards promotion and earned a total of 8,500 points for this stay, worth $85, making my stay essentially free and a great deal, This is another example of the excellent value you can find in the Wyndham Rewards program!
Unfortunately, similar to other Wyndham hotels, there were no benefits provided during my stay, the staff was aware of the Wyndham Rewards program (courtesy of all the ads plastered around the front desk), but not of the benefits that come with elite status.
Bottomline: The Wyndham Garden Inn Wismar offers a clean room, access to a gym and pool, a good breakfast and friendly service in an out-of-town location that’s feasible for road trips. While the value is just average for the location, it was excellent value for me due to the Wyndham Rewards promotion. Unless you can find equally good value, I’d probably rather recommend to stay closer to Wismar or Schwerin for your road trip of the German coast line!
