The Kindness Hotel Chihkan Tower offers simple, modern rooms in the heart of Tainan, Taiwan’s old capital. A large breakfast and dinner buffet are included in the price, making it great value. Tourists will appreciate the proximity to historic sights, restaurants and shops, making the Kindness Hotel Tainan a great choice for first-time visitors!
Location: The Kindness Hotel is centrally located, a 15 minute walk from the central train station (or 5 minutes by taxi) and within walking distance of many of the historic sights in the old capital of Taiwan! The tourist shuttle bus 88/99 leaves a block away to sights further afield. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance as well!
Service: The front desk was friendly and professional. They did not allow an early check-in but completed the check-in procedure quickly and provided all the necessary information about the hotel. Their English was sufficient for the task. Housekeeping was meticulous throughout the stay and cleaned the room thoroughly each day, restocking supplies as appropriate. Staff at the restaurant was equally friendly and helpful and managed to clear tables and restock the buffet despite being very busy!
Room: I had booked a Standard Double room and was “upgraded” to a larger, Quad room with two double beds. The room overall was basic and rather bland, held in a sea of beige, but very functional and well equipped. It felt a little cramped, with limited space to walk around the beds.
It has two comfortable double beds, with a night stand in-between and a single, padded chair in the corner. There is a wardrobe, sufficient for 1-2 people but tight for a family this room is intended for.
Against the wall are a work desk with chair, storage and a TV, coffee/tea facilities and a mini fridge. The desk doubles as a make-up table and features a mirror and the hair dryer.
The bathroom is equally well equipped. The large walk-in shower has multiple massage jets and a hand-held shower, as well as plenty of shampoo and soap, separately for male/female. The toilet has an electric bidet seat, a nice feature common in Korea, Japan, and increasingly in upscale hotels around Asia.
A full set of amenities is provided, a rarity at midscale hotels these days, although the quality was just ok. The bathroom is held in brown/beige tones with nice tiles and looked more upscale than the bedroom!
The free WiFi internet went from blazing fast 23Mbps in the morning to useless 0.01Mbps in the evening. It appeared to be overloaded by guests when full. I wouldn’t plan on streaming movies at night, but I was able to get work done in the morning or early afternoon.
Restaurant & Amenities: The rates at the Kindness Hotel include a buffet breakfast and a “midnight snack”. The restaurant is located at the ground floor and very large, with a long, two-sided buffet in the center and tables on both sides. Additional buffet tables and a make-to-order cooking station are in the back. While it feels rather cafeteria style, it’s all well maintained and the staff is on top of things.
For breakfast, you have a choice of fresh fruit, breads, juice & coffee, as well as eggs and a huge variety of Asian hot dishes.
In the afternoon, you’ll find soft serve ice cream in the lobby, as well as coffee/tea.
The midnight snack is a bit of a misnomer as it offers a full dinner buffet, from soup and salad, to a long list of hot Asian dishes and even ice cream and cake!
The food seemed to be a popular feature of the hotel – the restaurant was very busy during morning and evening hours.
If you are planning a longer stay, you’ll appreciate the laundry room – I didn’t try if for my short stay. There is no pool or gym at the hotel.
Bottomline: At a rate of $52/night, the Kindness Hotel Chihkan Tower offers clean, modern and fully equipped rooms, friendly service and a full breakfast & dinner, making it a great bargain! With its central location, it’s great to explore the town. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay again and would consider other Kindness Hotels around Taiwan as well!
