Accor plans to open one new hotel per day by 2020 with focus on Asia

Accor Hotels has been on a roll, with a number of acquisitions including Fairmont, Moevenpick and most recently the Mantra Group in Australia, adding hundreds of new hotels to their portfolio. They have now announced that they are planning to step up the pace even more, adding one new hotel every day by 2020 with half of them in Asia!

Accor Hotels pretty much abandoned North America with their sale of Motel 6 in 2012, only having a handful of properties across the region. Instead, they have focused on Asia. With 18% of their hotels in Asia (see more Accor Facts & Figures), they already have a higher share than any large hotel chain in the world – and they are doubling down on that strategy!
In an interview with TD Michael Issenberg, CEO for APAC at AccorHotels, said: “For the first half of 2018, 72% of global room openings for the group were in the Asia Pacific. We currently open, on average, a new hotel in the Asia Pacific every three days, but our goal is to move this to a new hotel every second day by 2020 [in APAC] and one hotel per day globally.”

Accor has become my top hotel chain in Asia over the last few years for the breadth and depth of hotel offerings in Asia: Their budget and mid-scale properties are all over the region, sometimes the only major chain hotels. And the luxury Sofitel, Fairmont or Raffles properties are often the best hotels in town!
And their rewards program Accor LeClub has improved over the years, now offering Lounge access at upscale properties and free breakfast at most hotels in Asia! If you are traveling a lot in Asia, they are a much better choice than their American competitors – check out my review of Accor LeClub
