Clean, modern motel right on the beach – Coastal Motel, Apollo Bay, Australia

For a trip down the Great Ocean Road in Australia, one of the best road trips in the world, we needed a stop over and I was looking for a good night’s sleep in the beach towns on the Surf Coast. I picked the Coastal Motel in Apollo Bay and was pleased. It’s simple, but clean and offered a large, modern room just across the street from the beach, parking right in front of the room and with plenty of restaurants in walking distance!

Location: The Coastal Motel is right on the highway leading through Apollo Bay, steps away from the long sandy beach! Plenty of restaurants, bars and shops are along the same road, a short walk away, making it a very convenient place for a stopover. If you are driving the Great Ocean Road, it’s about 4 hours 15 minutes  from Melbourne (or only 2h45 on the highway).

Service: The staff at the Coastal Motel was professional, check in and out were quick and easy. They were also available for questions and tips, but we didn’t need a lot. We only stayed one night and housekeeping had prepared the room appropriately, it was all clean and in working order. This is a basic motel, so there is not a lot of service to be expected and it was good!

Room: As the name suggests, this is a classic roadside motel, with the rooms located along the parking lot. You park in front of your room and access your room from the parking lot. This is not my favorite set-up, but i felt perfectly save here.
We had a large Superior Twin room, with one queen-size bed and one twin. The twin was near the door, as well as a luggage bench.

To the right were the queen bed and a sitting area. A window to the parking lot brought in plenty of light. The queen was set against a blue wall, a good fit for the oceanside hotel, with some artwork hung on the wall.

In the back of the room are a dining table and a fully equipped kitchen, with a fridge, microwave and sink. If you are planning a longer stay, this works perfectly well to have your meals in the room.

The bathroom is also very large, with a deep jacuzzi tub in the corner. I love jacuzzi tubs – they are so relaxing after a long day of driving and one of the reasons I picked this place! It was an upscale touch for a roadside motel! A shower head is mounted above it, but there is no curtain or glass enclosure. The small sink and toilet are on the opposite wall and there is plenty of space for your toiletries! The room has air conditioning, which we didn’t really need.

Restaurant/Amenities: The Coastal Motel has no restaurant – not a problem with a number of restaurants nearby. There are no gym or pool – but the long beautiful beach is just steps away. You’ll have free parking and there is a small area for a BBQ – much loved in Australia!

Bottomline: You get a large, clean and modern room across the street from the beach in the heart of town with parking in front and that’s it. If you are planning a family stay on the beach or just a stop-over on a road trip along the Great Ocean Road, the Coastal Motel works fine. At a rate of $122 on a weekday in the summer season, it was good value and earned its positive online reviews. I’d stay again and would recommend it for a short stay!
