Melaka is a great getaway from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, with a tranquil riverside setting, colonial history, lively Jonkers Market and interesting cuisine. And the 1825 Gallery Hotel has a prime location on the river, offers rooms in a wonderful, traditional decor that fits well to the spirit of the old town. All that is available at reasonable prices, making it a great choice for a visit to Melaka!
Location: The 1825 Gallery Boutique Hotel has a prime location in Melaka, right on the river in the old town. It is a central location, so all the historic sights of Melaka, the Jonkers Market, the many markets, shops and restaurants are just a short walk away. Yet, at the same time, the peaceful location makes it seem lightyears removed from the tourist crowds.
The 1825 Gallery Hotel is about 15 minutes by taxi from Melaka Sentral, the bus terminal or a short ride from several other bus drop-off locations.
Room: The hotel occupies a house that follows the traditional layout – it is very long and thin. Standard rooms don’t have windows as a result. Deluxe rooms have rooms to the interior atrium or to the street. But one key feature of the 1825 Gallery Hotel is the riverside location, so during my site inspection I asked to see one of the top River Suites.
The River Suites are large and have a king size bed at the center. You’ll also get a small sitting area.
On the opposite wall are a desk to get some work done and a small side board. One of the prettiest pieces of furniture is a traditional wardrobe in blue that gives the room a lot of character and fits perfectly to the atmosphere of the old town.
The bathroom is very modern in dark stone tiles. The room I saw had a large shower with partial glass wall, a toilet and a dual vanity with sinks in marble countertop and lots of space for your toiletries. Other rooms have a deep soaking bathtub by the window – that would be my choice!
The best part of the room is the small balcony with two chairs, overlooking the tranquil river. If you are trying to get away from the hectic city life of Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, this is a great spot to relax as the sun sets over the river in Melaka!
Restaurant & Amenities: The hotel restaurant faces the river and is separated from the promenade by lush greenery, giving you some privacy. The breakfast is served here and you can also have dinner out there. I didn’t get a chance to try it, but it looks like a great spot for a romantic evening out!
Bottomline: Most of the hotels in Melaka are either large, modern hotels around the old town or small, budget guest houses in the old town. The 1825 Gallery Hotel is a more upscale offering in a perfect location. The traditional decor fits perfectly to the setting and prices are reasonable. The 1825 Gallery Hotel Melaka is a great choice for a romantic getaway or peaceful retreat in Melaka and it’s high on my list to try on a future visit to Melaka! Check out current prices here!
