Review: Amaranth Suvarnabhumi Bangkok Airport Hotel Best Western Premier

The Best Western Amaranth Bangkok Airport offers large, modern rooms, a beautiful pool and gym and a good breakfast with a free shuttle to the airport, making it a convenient stay before or after a flight. The service was friendly and the elite treatment excellent, making this a great reward stay for elite members. This was one of the nicest Best Western hotels I’ve ever stayed at, deserving of the Premier Collection label! If you want a nice stay near the airport, but don’t want to spring for the Novotel on airport, the Best Western Amaranth is a good choice.

Location: The Amaranth Best Western is located near Bangkok’s main airport, Suvarnabhumi. It offers a free airport shuttle that’s easy to find at the hotel shuttle meeting spot near exit 5 on the arrivals level of BKK. The shuttle will take you to the hotel located at the opposite end of the airport from the exit in about 15 minutes. It’s a commercial area and there is little of interest to travelers around the hotel. There is also no public transport nearby, other than going back to the airport by shuttle.

That makes it convenient for a short stop-over after a late flight in or a very early flight out. But it’s not as convenient as the on-airport Novotel and saves about 30 minutes each way versus taking the airport train to Bangkok’s center.

Service: The airport staff offered a warm welcome and asked me to wait for the next shuttle, then escorted me to the outside pick-up stop and got me on my way.
At the hotel, I had an equally friendly reception and staff processed my check-in quickly and without any wait. I received an upgrade to a Premier Room that includes access to the Premier Lounge. The agent gave me all the necessary information about the breakfast, lounge and hotel amenities.
Housekeeping had done a thorough job preparing the room: Everything was clean and in good working order.
There is no permanent staff at the premier lounge, but staff regularly checked to clean or restock the buffet.
The restaurant was also well run, with guests taking to their seats, tables cleared quickly and the buffet being restocked appropriately throughout the breakfast time slot.
Overall, the service was polite, well trained and friendly – exceeding my expectations for a Best Western hotel and on par with other upscale hotels in Thailand.

Room: The Premier King Room is large and has a modern decor with some Thai design touches. The carpets are light, there is a mix of light and dark woods and the hotel’s theme colors, light and dark purple, are used as accents in the sofa, pillows and bed throw.

The King Bed has good quality sheets, pillows and comforter and a soft-enough (by local Thai standards) mattress for a comfortable sleep. There are night stands on each side, with lights and plenty of outlets for your gadgets.
Opposite the bed are a sofa with side table, a work desk with task chair, the TV and a bar cabinet.

The bar cabinet has coffee/tea facilities, water and a mini-bar that’s included in the price of the Premier Room. The mini bar offers several soft drinks and beer that are replenished once a day. It’s a nice touch, especially for an airport hotel where you might arrive very late or leave very early. The closet has a laptop-size safety box.

The bathroom is also very large and separated from the bedroom by two glass walls, making it very bright and open, my favorite design. A deep soaking tub is under the window and there are blinds for privacy, if you so prefer.

Nest to the tub is a sink-in-countertop with room for your toiletries. A full set of amenities, a hair dryer and good quality towels are provided.

In the corner is a separate, glass enclosed shower. It has a height-adjustable, removable shower head as well as a fixed rainfall shower head. The latter is mounted high enough to work for my 6’3 frame.

The free WiFi internet was reliable and very fast at an average speed of 64.6 Mbps – that’s fast enough to stream movies or hold video conferences and get some work done!

Restaurant & Amenities: The hotel offers meeting rooms that are nicely set on the hotel grounds and even caters to weddings.

For some relaxation after a long flight, there is a nice pool with plenty of loungers and umbrellas set around it.

For a little more shade, several daybeds are set under a roof and nicely prepared for guests. There is a small pool bar and staff was on hand all day for your assistance. They also have a small spa and massages are available, but I didn’t try it during my short visit.

If you want to keep up with your fitness routine, the large gym offers a good selection of cardio equipment facing the garden.

There are also weight machines and even free weights, so you can get a full-body workout during your visit!

The Premier Lounge was a surprise – t’s the first time I find one at a Best Western Hotel. The lounge welcomes guests with a nice flower arrangement and decor.

There are two separate areas with seating, one smaller and one larger with the drink and food buffet, as well as one closed conference room.

Throughout the day, you’ll find soft drinks, beer, fruits, pastries and some hot snacks. It was replenished throughout the day – a nice change from the typical evening happy hour, allowing you to enjoy it on your own schedule.

The breakfast (also included with a Premier Room), is served in the main restaurant on the ground floor. You’ll get a typical selection of fresh fruit and yogurt, bread and pastries and a selection of Western and Asian hot dishes, including eggs and meats. I’d consider both the selection and quality of the breakfast good, but slightly below other hotels in this price category.

Value & Rewards: I booked the Amaranth Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel Best Western Premier through the Best Western website, using 12,000 Best Western Rewards points for one night. The cash rate during my stay was $98/night all in. That’s a value of 0.8 cents/point, better than my standard evaluation of Best Western points at 0.6ct/pt and a good redemption. The cash price of $98/night is steep, and just ok value compared to what you can get at that price in the city. You can find the current prices here

As a Best Western Rewards Platinum member, I received a valuable room upgrade, that included breakfast, a free minibar and lounge access. That’s the best elite treatment I have received at any Best Western hotel worldwide!

Bottomline: The Best Western Amaranth Bangkok Airport offers large, modern rooms, a beautiful pool and gym and a good breakfast with a free shuttle to the airport, making it a convenient stay before or after a flight. The service was friendly and the elite treatment excellent, making this a great reward stay for elite members. If you want a nice stay near the airport, but don’t want to spring for the Novotel on airport, the Best Western Amaranth is a good choice.
