For my return trip to Yangon, I wanted to stay near Kandawgyi Lake and I picked the Esperado Lake View Hotel based on online reviews I found. It’s a modern, mid-range hotel and has the beautiful lake views its name promises. We really enjoyed our time there and I recommend it – read more why!
Location: The Esperado is located at the South Eastern corner of Kandawgyi Lake, just across the street circling the lake. An access gate to the wooden boardwalk is just across the street, giving you a chance to go for one of the nicest strolls in Yangon. You also have a great view over the lake, the Shwedagon pagoda and the Kawaweik Palace from the rooftop restaurant and the rooms facing the lake. The views are some of the best in town and alone worth a visit to the hotel, even if you are not staying. The Swhedagon Pagoda is a 40 minute walk along the lake or 10 minutes by taxi, downtown is the same distance. The Yangon airport is about 30-45 minutes by taxi. There are a few restaurants and convenience stores within 5 minutes of the hotel.
Service: On arrival, we noticed the modern lobby, very large for a hotel of this size. The front desk was friendly and speaks very good English. We were checked into quickly, received all the necessary information about the hotel and answers to all the questions we had about Yangon!
Housekeeping had done a thorough job – our room was spotlessly clean, fully stocked and everything was working. They made up the room just as well each day.
The friendly service continued at the restaurant. Staff was quick to find seats, bring menus and take orders. During breakfast, they kept the buffet filled and tables clean throughout our stay.
Room: Our standard room (called “Deluxe”) was large and modern, just as the online photos promised. It’s furnished in dark wood and held in beige tones, but with enough colors thrown in to look friendly and modern. It has a comfortable queen bed, a sitting area with two chairs and a table, as well as a large work desk and plenty of storage. You’ll find a flat-screen TV with international cable programs, coffee/tea facilities, a safe and a strong air conditioner, all working well. The bathroom was also modern and of ok size, if with an odd layout: The toilet is near the door, the shower with full glass enclosure and the vessel style sink and mirror next to it. Everything looked new and was very clean. The towels and toiletries were of good quality. The wifi internet is free and was working fine during our stay in the room and restaurant.
If you’d like a lake view from your room, you’ll need to select at least a “Premiere” room that face the lake and street.
Restaurant/Amenities: The hotel has a pretty large gym, with cardio and weight equipment for a good workout. There is a spa as well, although the treatment room we saw looked fairly simple and we did not try it out.
One of the highlights is the rooftop restaurant with its best-in-town views over the lake, pagoda and palace. Breakfast is included in the room price and consisted of a buffet with some fruit, pastries and hot, local dishes. The selection and quality were average compared to other hotels in this price range in the region.
There is indoor and outdoor seating. Outside, you can choose between tables and bar-style seating facing the lake, our favorite.
The restaurant also serves drinks & dinner. My favorite time to go is during sunset, with the sun going down over downtown with even better views than during daytime. We had dinner one night and they offer a wide range of local and international dishes. The food quality was good, but nothing special. I’d recommend to enjoy the sunset views over snacks and drinks, but recommend to head elsewhere for dinner!
Bottomline: For a rate of $82/night you get a large, modern room, free internet and breakfast with some of the best views in town and one of the best locations. You have easy access to the lake, Shwedagon Pagoda and downtown, making it great for first time visitors to Yangon. At this price, it was great value and I’d recommend it! If you like the area, but would like a pool and more upscale features, you can try the Kandawgyi Palace Hotel (better location, twice the price during our stay) or the Chatrium Hotel (worse location, nice pool & spa, 50% more). If the prices are closer to the Esperado during your visit, they would be great alternatives – you can find the current prices here!
