A tropical island hotel in the city: Plantation Urban Resort Phnom Penh

The Plantation Urban Resort & Spa is a peaceful oasis in busy Phnom Penh with modern, tastefully decorated rooms, full service amenities and luxurious touches throughout. Off all the hotels I visited in Phnom Penh, this was my favorite. The pond in the lobby and the pool area with lush greenery make you feel more like on a tropical island than in the heart of a capital city, making the Plantation Urban Resort Phnom Penh a unique city hotel!

Location: The Plantation Urban Resort & Spa Phnom Penh is located just one block East of the Royal Palace and the National Museum. You can reach both on foot in a few minutes, as well as countless bars, restaurants, coffee shops and nightclubs, making this a great location to explore Phnom Penh. The ride to the airport is between 45-90 minutes depending on the traffic. The Plantation is on one of the major roads, but the main buildings are set away from the road, so noise is not an issue.

Room: The Superior Double Rooms in the original building are a compact 22sqm and have a king-size bed with four posts and a mosquito net, a very romantic set-up for a couple. There is a table with chair to get some work done, as well as a TV, laptop size safe and coffee/tea facilities. The decor is contemporary with dark grey floor tiles, light brown wood and green accent colors in the bed throws and artwork.

The modern bathroom is open to the bedroom, with the sink in the open area.

The toilet cubicle with a wooden door and the shower cubicle with a glass door offer privacy despite the open layout, a very contemporary design I liked.
The Deluxe Twin Rooms are larger at 30sqm and have two four-poster beds for friends or family traveling together. The bathroom is more traditional and closed, with shower, sink and toilet having privacy.
In the new wing of the hotel, you’ll find the Citylife Studio (aka the King Room). You don’t get any pool views or balconies here, but the same decor with four-poster beds and green accents. The bathrooms are large and modern, with grey tiles, a large glass enclosed shower and a white sink on a dark marble countertop for all your things.

Restaurant & Amenities: While not really an “Amenity”, the entrance to the resort was one of my favorite features: Plantation Urban Resort sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s exactly how it feels when you arrive: You step through the gate of the property into the courtyard of the fashionable villa, with a great pond with water plants and a tree. It feels like an oasis in the city!

But that’s not all – there are two pool areas with a similar feel to it. The main pool area is surrounded by tall trees and enough greenery to forget you are in the heart of the city. There are loungers and cabanas to relax and the main restaurant to have breakfast, lunch, dinner or just drinks and snacks as you while away the time!
There is a second, smaller and less jungle’y pool area that is also open for non-hotel guests for a fee (fee is waived if you order food & drink). So, if you are not lucky enough to stay at the Plantation, you can still spend a day in the wonderful surroundings to escape the city!
If you are done lounging and relaxing, you can keep up with your workout schedule at the hotel gym.

Bottomline: The Plantation Urban Resort & Spa is a peaceful oasis in busy Phnom Penh with modern, tastefully decorated rooms, full service amenities and luxurious touches throughout. Off all the hotels I visited in Phnom Penh, this was my favorite. Alas, many people seem to agree and it was sold out during my trip. At rates starting at $80/night (a few weeks after my trip), it’s great value and a top recommendation for a stay in Phnom Penh! You can find current rates for the Plantation Urban Resort here!
