Fantastic Foto Friday: Ancient City Angkor Thom, Cambodia

When visiting Siem Reap to see the ancient temples, Angkor Wat gets most of the attention as an overwhelmingly beautiful temple. While Angkor Thom might not have any single temple as impressive, the pure size of this ancient city complex is mind-boggling as you wander through it: From individual temples like the one above with its long causeway to the parade grounds with giant elephant statues and the huge faces staring at you from other temples, it is a grand complex far outstripping cities of the time in Europe.

Fantastic Foto Friday: Banteay Srei, Citadel of the Women, Cambodia

Banteay Srei Temple, Cambodia

The more visitors the famous temples of Angkor in Cambodia receive, the more the tours and guides seem to focus on the most popular ones, like Angkor Wat or the famous jungle temple of Ta Phrom, but if you want to see some impressive temples without the crowds, try to start the day early and go further to see the Citadel of the Women Banteay Srei, a smaller yet beautiful example of early Angkor Architecture!
To make the most out of your visit, I suggest to avoid the tour groups and crowds by going on your own. It’s easy – check out my Tips for getting around Angkor and Best Places to Stay in Angkor!

Fantastic Foto Friday: Jungle Temple Ta Phrom in Angkor, Cambodia

Even if you haven’t been to the famous temples of Angkor in Cambodia, you might have seen the famous jungle temple of Ta Phrom, with huge trees overgrowing the century old temples, courtesy of Angelina Jolie’s movie “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” from 2000.
And if you didn’t like the movie, it’s still worth visiting Angkor Wat – seeing this old city that had a population of 1 Million people when London only had 50,000 is fascinating and seeing the jungle reclaim its space is a powerful impression!
