Modern rooms and resort pool at the edge of Phom Penh’s expat area: Rambutan Resort

I enjoyed my stay at the Rambutan Resort Siem Reap and was eager to check out the sister property Rambutan Phnom Penh on a recent visit to Cambodia’s capital. It offers chic rooms, a resort-style pool surrounded by lush greenery at low prices on the edge of the popular expat area, making it great value for anybody planning to see Phnom Penh with a good amount of relaxation at their hotel!

Location: The Rambutan Phnom Penh is located on the Southern end of Boeung Keng Kang (or BKK1), a booming area popular with expats. The most popular tourist destinations, like the Royal Palace, National Museum or riverside are all a taxi ride of 15-20 minutes away, the restaurants, bars, spas and shops of BKK are a 5-10 minute taxi ride or a lengthy walk away. The trip to the airport is 45-90 minutes, depending on traffic. This makes the location less convenient than other hotels I have reviewed if you are planning to walk, but taxi rides are cheap if you don’t like walking in the heat.

Room: The rooms at the Rambutan boutique hotel are unique: Near the entrance, you’ll find the bathroom with the vanity open to the bedroom and a toilet in a cubicle with door.

The bedroom has a queen-size bed and a daybed under the window. The floors are colored concrete for an industrial look and there is modern, colorful artwork on the walls. Across from the bed is a small table with chair. Each room has a balcony and, what seems odd at first, next to the balcony door is a shower stall with glass door.

It becomes clear that’s a good idea when you step out on the balcony: There is a deep soaking tub on the balcony for a relaxing bath, with screens and plants for privacy. At a time of more and more boring uniform hotel rooms, this is a fun feature and I really enjoy a bath after a busy day about the city! The balcony also has a chair to hang out.

Restaurant & Amenities: The Rambutan Phnom Penh combines the city-chic of the modern rooms with an island-resort style pool. It’s surrounded by trees and lush greenery, making for a great escape from the city. There are loungers, cabanas and umbrellas to get comfortable and there was enough space for guests during my visit.

Next to the pool are the restaurant and bar, serving food and drinks all day. As I only did a site inspections, but didn’t stay at the hotel, I didn’t have a chance to try them!
There is also a spa offering massage services on site, so you don’t have to leave to be pampered!

Bottomline: The Rambutan Phnom Penh offers chic, modern rooms with private bath tubs on the balcony in a resort-setting with a nice pool area to relax. While it’s a little further from town, prices are low at less than $60 during high-season. If you want to combine the sights of Phnom Penh with a good amount of relaxation and pampering at the hotel, the Rambutan is a good choice and good value!
