Flash Sale: IHG Rewards Points from 0.5cents/point, hotel nights from $25!

IHG Rewards holds regular sales of their points currency. In the current Flash Sale till March 22, 2018, you can get 100% bonus points when buying 5,000 points or more. The more points you buy, the lower the price. Starting at 26,000 points, the price is only 0.5 cents/point – the lowest I have ever seen! If you have a high value redemption in mind, now is a good time to buy and stay at an IHG Hotel for as little as $25/night!

With more than 5,000 hotels worldwide, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) is one of the largest in the world. I value IHG Rewards Club points at around 0.5cents/point and don’t recommend to purchase IHG points at the regular price of 1.35 cents/point. My IHG Pro Tip allows you to buy points for less than 0.7ct/pt in an “emergency”, but during the current promotion you can purchase them at what I consider “fair value” of 0.5ct/pt for the first time since I have been a member of the program.

You receive a 100% bonus when purchasing 5,000 points or more and receive 5,000+5,000=10,000 points for $67.50 (or a decent 0.675ct/pt). The price per point drops the more points you buy and reaches the lowest price of 0.5ct/pt when purchasing 26,000+26,000=52,000 points for $260! You can purchase a maximum of 60,000+60,000=120,000 points for $600.

Should you buy? This is the lowest price ever, but that doesn’t mean you should jump at the sale! The main reason why the price has dropped is that IHG Rewards Club points have lost a lot of value over the last few years. It is becoming more and more difficult to achieve value that is significantly more than 0.6cents/point – reflecting a 20% discount compared to paying cash!
Therefore, you should only purchase the points if you have a high value redemption in mind. For example, I’m considering a stay at the excellent InterContinental Vienna, Austria. The cash rate is $260 vs a rewards rate of 35,000 points. You can purchase the points for one night at $175, more than a 30% saving over the direct cash purchase!
I don’t recommend to purchase points without a high-value redemption in mind – the points are likely to loose their value, reducing the benefit you might receive!
