Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, was planned to be the capital of Australia, settled by free immigrants and not convicts like the bigger cities Sydney and Melbourne. While that plan never quite worked out, you have a very walk-able city with historic buildings like the Glenelg Townhall, a pedestrian mall and nice parks. Or you can enjoy the surrounding wine country or head out for a road trip on the Great Ocean Road!
