My favorite lounge in Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport – Thai Airways Terminal D Business Class

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International airport is huge and very busy. While there is plenty to see and do on a layover, it’s nice to be able to retreat to a lounge and Thai Airways offers multiple lounges in the terminal for its premium cabin passengers as well as elite frequent travelers. My favorite lounge complex is in Terminal D, on the lower level just after going through security and immigration.

This is the largest lounge complex in Bangkok, offering separate lounges for Business Class customers and StarAlliance / RoyalOrchid Gold memebers and for First Class passengers, as well as my favorite part of the complex, the Royal Orchid Spa! After taking an escalator from the main terminal level, you’ll be welcomed at the reception desk. I have been at the complex frequently on both Thai Business Class and Thai First Class flight. On my most recent visit, I had access to the Business Class lounge (Royal Silk) as a StarAlliance Gold member, traveling on a Thai Airways Economy class ticket.
The lounge is very large, long and narrow. You’ll find some seating with soft-cushioned chairs, followed by the buffet area and more seating. While the lounge is huge and gotten busier over the years, it is well designed and there is enough separation between the different areas to afford some privacy and to keep things very quiet.
The food and drink offering is comparable to other lounges in Asia and much better than lounges in the US. The food includes small snacks, as well as Thai, other Asian and international hot dishes. There is always plenty of fresh fruit, which I enjoy as a healthy snack – instead of the chips US carriers seem to prefer. You’ll also have plenty of choice for drinks, from soft drinks and hot drinks to wine, beer and liquor.
What really puts the Thai Airways lounge a step above others are the number of other areas you’ll find here. In addition to the work areas with cubicle-style desks and bathrooms and showers, you’ll find, a childrens play area to keep the little ones entertained. It’s a separate space off to the site, allowing them to play without turning all of the mall into a noisy playground!

My favorite part though is the Royal Orchid Spa, across the terminal aisle from the joint Business/First Class entrance (at the very end of the business class lounge. As a Business Class customer, you can have a 30 minute treatment and as a First Class customer 60 minutes, based on availability. I’ve taken advantage of it in the past and loved it – it makes a long layover much more bearable and is especially helpful prior to an overnight flight – I sleep so much better!

Keep in mind that the airport terminal is huge and you might have a long walk to your gate – check with the reception desk how long it will take you when you arrive.
The lounge is no longer listed as accessible for StarAlliance Gold members, but I was allowed in without issue. There are smaller lounges closer to the gate areas available for StarAlliance Gold – read my review of the Thai Airways Lounge in the Terminal C area!
