Travel News: New Hotels in Manila, Philippines

Despite Manila’s rapid growth over the last few years and a population of over 12 Million people, you don’t find as many hotels as in other Asian cities and prices are higher than in Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur for similar accommodation. And if you are looking for American chains to earn or redeem reward points, your pickings are very slim. Fortunately, that is slowly changing with a number of new hotels being built! Find out what’s coming soon to Manila after the break!

The Starwood Group has currently no hotels in Manila at hotel. The former Westin at the Manila Bay became the Sofitel many years ago. But that is changing soon and there are three new hotels planned for Manila: The Sheraton Manila will be the first one, scheduled to open in March 2018. It’s currently rising across from Manila’s NAIA airport terminal 3, next to Resort World with its existing Marriott and Remington hotels. With the new skyway to open soon, it will be easy to reach Makati or the bay and there is plenty of entertainment, dining and shopping in walking distance.
sheraton-manilaThe Westin Manila Bayshore will be next up, located in the second Resort Worlds complex on Manila Bay, near Rizal Park and the old town of Intramuros, together with two other hotels. The development will also feature an Opera house, entertainment, dining and convention facilities. It’s schedule has been pushed back, so the current opening date of December 2018 may move back to sometime in 2019 based on local news.
The Westin Manila Sonata Place is located in the third business district of Manila, Ortigas, a more classic business oriented location. It’s scheduled for late in 2019.

Hyatt Hotels is also expanding in Manila. After recently opening the Hyatt City of Dreams at the entertainment and gambling complex, they are preparing for the opening of the Grand Hyatt Manila in the first quarter of 2017. It will occupy the top 25 floors of the MetroBank tower, the tallest building in the Philippines at 318m (1,043ft). It’s located in Bonifacio Global City, Manila’s most modern and upscale business district.

They have also planned the Hilton Manila, also located in Resort World near the airport, right next to the Sheraton and Marriott hotels. It’s scheduled to open in Q1 of 2017, although I wouldn’t be surprised if that date is pushed back.

hiltonmanilaThe arrival of these international chains should increase the competition from a service and quality perspective, and hopefully also bring prices more in line with other Asian capitals. I will provide updates on their development and review these hotels as soon as I have a chance!
