Boutique hotel in the heart of Bangkok at a bargain price – Park Plaza Sukhumvit Soi 18

I’ve visited Bangkok many times and visited the tourist sights more than once. When I return now, I usually visit friends and enjoy the energy of the city, the shopping and spas, with a few sights thrown in here and there. And one of the best spots to stay with easy access to everything Bangkok has to offer is the Asok neighborhood with BTS and MRT stations on your door step, allowing you to avoid the crazy Bangkok traffic. The Park Plaza Bangkok Soi 18 is a stylish boutique hotel, belonging to the Club Carlson family that fits the bill at a surprisingly affordable price!

Location: The Park Plaza is located on the quiet Sukhumvit Soi 18, a 10 minute walk from the Asoke BTS and Sukhumvit MRT stations as well as the Terminal 21 mall. From here, you can get to the historic sights on the river, shopping along Sukhumvit, the business district at Sathorn as well as the two airports with public transportation quickly. If you have ever been stuck in Bangkok traffic, that is a key consideration for your hotel choice! There are a few hotels closer to these train stations, including the Park Plaza Sukhumvit or the Grande Centre Point Terminal 21, and you pay extra for that.

Service: The service was consistently professional and friendly, even by high Thai standards, from the bell hop to the front desk and house keeping. The front desk was quick and thorough in addressing any special requests I had. Housekeeping was able to service my room early in the day, so I never returned to a messy room.

ParkPlazaSoi18 RoomRoom: You reach your room through the dark-colored hallways with interesting lighting – very W’ish. In the room, I really liked the hardwood floors, the modern color scheme and the big bathroom! I especially like, the these days more common feature, of a window from the bathroom to the bedroom. The photos on the Park Plaza web site are completely accurate and give you a good idea of what to expect. The materials used are much higher quality than the price category suggests – they didn’t cut any corners and achieved the boutique look without a trip to IKEA (yes, looking at you, ibis!) The bed is very comfortable, not as firm as many beds you’ll find in Thailand. A TV, safe, fridge and coffee are all provided and working.

Amenities: The hotel as a nice pool, great if you want to relax after sightseeing or shopping, and a small gym, if you want to make up for the great Thai food. There is a Fitness First gym at the Terminal 21 mall, if you need a real work out. There’s also a nice-looking restaurant, but there are just too many food choices in walking distance for me to try it!

Value/Rewards: The Park Plaza belongs to the Club Carlson family, offering you rewards in their program. It is great value – a similar hotel in a large US city will cost you 2-3 times as much and an independent Thai hotel will cost about the same, without the rewards option! The Park Plaza is usually priced very low, so I would not recommend to redeem rewards here. It’s great to score easy points during the frequent Club Carlson promotions!

Overall, the Park Plaza is a great option for anybody looking for stylish accommodations with easy access to public transportation. I’d recommend it and would stay here again. The participation in the Club Carlson program is an added benefit, especially during Club Carlson promotions!
