Lonely Planet Top 10 Cities to visit in 2019

Every year Lonely Planet, my favorite travel guides, publishes a list of top destinations to visit. The countries and cities Lonely Planet selects are usually beautiful places that are just making it (back) onto traveler’s lists, yet before they become mainstream and the tour buses arrive. That always makes for an intriguing list to check out and find inspiration for your next travel adventure. Without further ado, here are the Top 10 Cities to visit in 2019 according to Lonely Planet:

The best city to visit in 2019 is Copenhagen! The capital of Denmark has long been a favorite and makes for great summer trips. The food scene is fantastic, I love the art and design scene and the atmosphere is relaxed, helped by the welcoming Danes.
Just don’t be to excited about seeing the city’s iconic mermaid – she’s tiny and way over-hyped. And start saving because Copenhagen is one of the most expensive cities in Europe with expensive hotels. Check out Choice Privileges for one of the best deals to stay on points!
Funny enough, I booked a trip to Copenhagen just before this list came out, so I’ll have an update with my personal impressions of the city soon!

The number 2 city to visit in 2019 is Shenzen, China! I remember Shenzen as a grey industrial city in the shadows of Hong Kong when I visited more than 15 years ago. It has come a long way from then, with a buzzing nightlife, growing art and design scene and some impressive architecture. It’s (now) just a short high-speed train ride from Hong Kong, making it easy to explore. Maybe it’s time for me to add it on my future travel list?

Third on the list is Novi Sad, Serbia. I have to admit that, despite having traveled extensively in the former Yugoslavia and the Balkan, Novi Sad has never been on “my list”. Lonely Planet lists the title of European Youth Capital 2019 and European Capital of Culture 2021 as indications for the burgeoning city. This is why I love the Lonely Planet lists – it adds cities to my list that I wouldn’t have discovered other ways. Stay tuned…

The fourth spot on the list of top countries to visit in 2019 goes to Miami! Miami surprised me on this list. I always enjoyed the combination of good weather, beaches, nightlife and art deco architecture – but I consider it “old news”. But if you haven’t been, you should absolutely check it out!

The runner ups in the top 10 list are as follows:
5. Kathmandu, Nepal
6. Mexico City
7. Dakar, Senegal
8. Seattle, USA
9. Zadar, Croatia
10. Meknes, Morocco
