If you haven’t had enough history in Lisbon, Europe’s most underrated capital, or just want to enjoy the cooler mountains, Sintra is a great getaway from Lisbon, easy to do as a day-trip. And Pena Palace was my favorite sight on the trip, with it’s different styles from different ages all combined into one castle that looks like straight out of a Disney fairy tale!
I consider Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, one of the most underrated cities in Europe. And if you want to combine it with a beach getaway, you can be in charming Cascais in less then an hour to hang out on the beach, enjoy the beautiful palace above, the fortress or the pedestrian area with its many restaurants and stores!
Krakow in Poland has a proud history and the Castle above the city is a great place to explore it. Riga, the capital of Latvia, is steeped in history, it’s easy to explore the old town on foot, you can discover it’s Art Noveaux buildings or learn about modern history! And you can have great food like at Domini Canes while staying at nice hotels like the Radisson Blu Ridzene or Radisson Blu Daugava and it’s inexpensive when compared to other European capitals.
If you have a few days in Lisbon, I recommend you include a day-trip to Sintra, only 45 minutes from the city in the mountains, with two fantastic palaces, an old fortress and a chance for some nice hiking!
